Today's Rapid Intensification Risk
A daily index measuring geometric conditions favoring rapid tropical storm intensification — updated each morning for all four major ocean basins.
Geometric conditions are strongly favorable for rapid intensification of tropical storms in the Atlantic basin today.
Geometric conditions are strongly favorable for rapid intensification of tropical storms in the East Pacific basin today.
Geometric conditions are strongly favorable for rapid intensification of tropical storms in the West Pacific basin today.
Elevated geometric conditions are present in the South Indian basin. Storms in this region warrant monitoring.
What is the DCT Intensity Index?
The DCT Intensity Index is a daily measure of geometric conditions that research has associated with rapid tropical storm intensification — the sudden, dangerous strengthening that can catch communities off guard.
Like the UV index, it gives you one number you can act on. A High index day means conditions are strongly favorable for intensification. A Low day means the underlying geometry is not aligned for it.
The index is updated every morning at 12:00 UTC and applies independently to each of the four major tropical cyclone basins worldwide.
